Machine Data Logger MDL
- How can I get the operation manual?
- Can the device also be used for recording history data?
- After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Error 8012"
- After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong COM number".
- After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong variant".
- The MDL cannot find itself in the list of Profibus devices of the Profibus DP field bus configuration software.
- I want to operate the MDL on another field bus.
- I want to operate the MDL on another PLC control system.
- Bit 1 in the status byte "Fault" = TRUE.
- The MDL suddenly reports a high number of machine clocks.
- The MDL reports the machine clock number as DINT -1 resp. Hex FFFF.
- After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong password!. Please repeat!"
Can the device also be used for recording history data?
- The device has been designed for recording machine up-times. For this purpose the system always saves the current values for machine clock and hours of operation. It is not possible to determine when events took place (i.e. when the values were updated).
- The user-defined data 1...100 can be used in a limited manner for recording history, because in this case the data is recorded together with date and time. However the PC can only be used for reading out the last saved value together with its respective date and time.
- Recording larger amounts of history data requires the use of other Schleicher products.
After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Error 8012"
- The USB cable was plugged while the MDL was switched on and off again.
- Pull the USB cable, wait 10 seconds and then replug the cable.
After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong COM number".
- The COM number of the USB driver was wrong or there is no USB driver installed.
- The USB driver must be installed before the MDL is connected to the PC for the first time.
- The COM number of the device (driver) can be found in the device manager under "Connections (COM and LPT)".
- For COM port and driver installation look at the operation manual, chapter 7.2.
After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong variant".
- The client-specific device variant of the MDL and the Excel file do not match.
- Please contact the machine manufacturer.
- The variant number (part of the software version) can be found in the type plate
The MDL cannot find itself in the list of Profibus devices of the Profibus DP field bus configuration software.
- The GDS file must be installed.
- It is possible that the device may have been listed under "Other field devices" or "Andere Feldgeräte":

I want to operate the MDL on another field bus.
- Currently only the Profibus DP is available.
- Other field buses on request.
I want to operate the MDL on another PLC control system.
- Currently PLC function blocks are available for STEP-7® and Schleicher MULTIPROG.
- IEC 61131 CoDeSys is in preparation.
- Other SPS systems on request.
- Operation with any control system is also possible. A detailed description of the Profibus interface of the MDL can be provided on request.
Bit 1 in the status byte "Fault" = TRUE.
- The memory cell for the machine cycles to the MDL has been loaded with a wrong value.
- Possibly high/low byte swapping is wrong.
The MDL suddenly reports a high number of machine clocks.
- The memory cell for the machine clocks to the MDL is written by the PLC program. If a high number is transferred to the MDL for just a single PLC cycle, the MDL takes over this number.
- Possibly high/low byte swapping is wrong.
- Resetting the piece number can only be done at Schleicher's main factory or in consultation with the machine manufacturer.
The MDL reports the machine clock number as DINT -1 resp. Hex FFFF.
- The machine clocks have been counted "to the end". The MDL counts the clocks as unsigned DINT. The highest countable piece number is thus 4,294,967,295.
- Resetting the piece number can only be done at Schleicher's main factory or in consultation with the machine manufacturer.
After an attempt was made to read data, the system reports "Wrong password!. Please repeat!"
- The password used is wrong.
- Data can only be read using the correct password. There is no master password.
- The factory supplied password is "init" (note lower case characters).
- However the machine manufacturer may have implemented his own password in the control system.
