Staying Sharp:

CNC Control

Machining Skis with Control Technology from Schleicher

Berlin: Equipment is a major factor for all skiers, whether amateur or professional. Of course the gear has to be maintained regularly and adapted to changing snow conditions. The Italian firm Mantec offers an innovative technique that makes the complex process of stripping and waxing a thing of the past. Mantec’s machines – equipped with Schleicher controllers – grind tiny, absolutely precise profiles into the ski’s running surface. The skier chooses from a range of patterns to adapt his sporting equipment to the respective snow consistency, competition conditions and other factors and optimize performance.

The Controller Solution Schleicher Electronic offers high-performance control technology, tried and tested in specialied applications such as the case described here.. In Mantec ski grinding machines an XCx 300 controls the motion of the grinding wheel and the ski in three axes. This controller combines NC functions with a PLC to IEC 61131-3 in a cost-effective and flexible solution. [more]

CNC and PLC for Mantec

Synchronizing by Shared RAM

Schleicher implements the combination of numeric and sequential control in XCx controllers by means of special architecture. The two parts of the controller use a shared RAM for data exchange. The CNC and PLC are permanently synchronized because a PLC task is integrated in interpolation. This means that in the XCx’s real-time multitasking operating system, the cycle time of time-critical high-priority PLC program modules exactly matches the interpolation cycle of the CNC. As well as standard functions for the CNC, special Schleicher-specific algorithms are also available – for example for robot control or synchronous axes. Up to eighteen user tasks can be assigned to the PLC, which controls and monitors the whole periphery.
